Apple Orchard Fall Photos
Fall is a great time getting the family together for photos. The colors are warm and inviting, the temps are more comfortable for outdoor excursions, and you can use the photo to hang on your wall and/or print for Holiday cards!
In my case, I wasn’t trying to get the entire family together for this apple orchard photo shoot. What I wanted to do was surprise my brother and his wife with updated photos of their youngest little cutie pie for her 3rd birthday! We always have good intentions of getting together to do birthday photos, but usually one thing or another gets in the way and they get pushed out several months. So this year, I took it upon myself….and my mother, to make sure that didn’t happen!
It works out well that my niece was born in the fall because she absolutely LOVES apples and pumpkins!! So, it was a no brainer that I decided to take her to an apple orchard for the shoot. Plus, it was a win, win…! I also wanted some fresh picked apples!! 😀 So, off to County Line Orchard we went!!
The week we had initially planned to do the apple orchard photos was beautiful, cool and fall like. But as luck would have it, my niece had a cold that week. Therefore, we pushed back our trip to the apple orchard a week and found ourselves in the midst of a late summer heatwave. Needless to say, it was HOT and we were happy to utilize any patch of shade we could find!!
She's a Pistol!
I love her dearly, but she’s a pistol!! Seriously, they have their hands FULL with this one!! It’s her way or no way!! She could be the poster child for strong-willed children. That being said, there was no way we were going to be able to grab the beautiful morning light for photos because she likes to sleep in. Plus, this was a surprise remember? So, I couldn’t wait for the evening light either, or her parents would be home and wondering what’s up. So, my mom and I set out mid afternoon for the apple orchard and decided that we’d just have to deal with the lighting the best we could.
I may be biased, but I have to say that she is the cutest little thing ever!! I love her smile….and those dimples, OMG!!! It made it SO hard not to give in and let her eat the apples! She REPEATEDLY told us that she wanted to eat the apples for dinner. Seriously, you know what a 3 year old is like….every apple she picked she told us that was the apple she was going to eat for dinner. LOL!!!
Do you remember that I said my niece is a little pistol? Yeah, she doesn’t like having her photo taken. This also means that I didn’t try to pose her at all. For the photos where she’s sitting on the blanket, all I did was have her sit and I was ready and waiting to capture whatever she did. It also means that I just let her pick apples and took photos as she worked. So needless to say, I shot A LOT of photos and most of them are not worthy of anything but the trash bin, but that’s the beauty of using digital cameras!
The Lesson I learned at the Apple Orchard
One lesson I learned from photographing her at the apple orchard, and probably any kid that doesn’t like being in front of the camera, is to shoot with a long lens. It forced me to stand back quite a ways and get out of her face. Plus, it allows her to relax and laugh at Grandma. It also means that I don’t get a lot of shots of her looking at the camera, but since I prefer lifestyle over posed photos, this works well! What I could’ve tried doing was to have my mom come and stand behind me. This would’ve made it appear as though she’s looking at me. However, we also wanted to make sure she stayed where she was, so we didn’t attempt this. Another option would’ve been to have another person with us. One person to stay close to keep her where she was and/or fix anything, and another to stand over me to make her laugh and get her attention. However, it was a school day, so I didn’t have the luxury of having my son with me….and she LOVES her Kyle!!!

Northwest Indiana is home to many beautiful photo locations. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a young man to celebrate graduating from 8th. We went to a local place that really surprised me. It was prettier than I had imagines and offered plenty of places for great photo shoots. If you want to see the pics and learn about where we went, make sure to click here to see Charlie's shoot!
